On Friday August 1st, CalSouthern Graduates and their guests from all over the world converged on the UCI campus in Irvine California for the annual CalSouthern graduation ceremony. We were happy to host over 150 guests for this auspicious event. In spite of the increased cost of fuel making air travel more expensive than ever, these gradates from far and wide would not let anything stop them from making the trip to sunny California to attend the ceremony and walk up on stage to be recognized and awarded in front of their peers, friends and family members.

Many of the graduates arrived a few days early to see the many local tourist attractions and to visit the administrative offices to meet the staff and the deans of the university. The staff and many of the faculty were happy to be able to meet with each graduate and congratulate them on a job well done. On the day of the graduation some of the graduates also participated in a professional photo taking session, the images from which will be featured in the new university brochure, as well as in many upcoming magazine and newspaper ads. (See some of the pictures on the right.)

After a brief reception and appetizers the ceremony was underway. Our MC was Jeffrey Fazio, J.D., Director of Institutional Research. Dr. Carol Stanton, Chief Operating Officer, gave the key-note address and introduced the faculty and staff.

Dr. Caroll Ryan, President and Chief Academic Officer, spoke on behalf of the University, giving a powerful speech encouraging the graduates to continue on their path to success as they attain new heights, and congratulated the students and their families for their combined efforts in working towards this great accomplishment. She also outlined the University’s plans to extend the services offered through the CalSouthern Alumni association.

Our commencement speaker this year was Dr. Patsy Phillips, (Pictured left) CalSouthern Alumni, Class of 2005. Dr. Phillips challenged the graduates with a compelling address entitled ‘Making a Difference’. Dr. Phillips has worked for over 20 years in human service, both in nonprofit organizations and county government. She is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, holds a Masters in Counseling and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Psychology, from California Southern University. Dr. Phillips is on the Board of Directors of the 27,000 member California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT), serving currently as the President-Elect.
